Fun’L (down the drain)

First painting using only brushes.

First painting using preliminary charcoal sketch.

Purchased a funnel to drain off & separate clear brush cleaner (thinner) from contaminated, dirty cleaner.

In earlier paintings, began to walk around the table while painting for ease of applying paint from a different perspective. Began to turn paintings rather than walk around the table. With Fun’L, the canvas was placed on a “lazy Susan” apparatus to make turning the painting easier.

Australians will recognize the counter-clockwise direction of rotation evident in the appearance of the “L” symbol as the painting goes through the funnel and “down the drain”.

Had a lot of fun with this one, but took a long time.

Notes:

  • Painting was much darker than anticipated

  • Black colour was introduced too early, – try progressing from light to dark (although not the recommended order)

  • Paint “clumped” on brushes – try cleaning brush more frequently – after each stroke application?

  • Use more paint thinner on the brush

  • All but white paint was terribly old (@ 10 years?)

  • Brushes were bargain basement variety hogs hair

  • Surprised at how the silver, metallic-looking brush strokes pop – best viewed up close (@ 15” from Canvas)
