4:7 (Purple & Green) – Notes

  • ‘Twas a major problem – start to finish, but satisfied with the results

  • First background (orange) needed two coats & probably could have used a third

  • Second background coat (purple & green) – all sections had two coats except dark green – three coats

  • Typed “syringe” in a Google search field & discovered there are glue syringe applicators

  • Made a trip to Lee Valley – they had three types – one curved-tip syringe whose tip could be cut to the desired diameter, a set of 5 syringes with 2 different sized tips, and a squeeze bottle applicator with 5 x 2 different sized tips

  • Opted for the later to give the most flexibility in the thickness of the paint stream

  • The accordion-style paint reservoir proved difficult to fill and to clean

  • Time to continue searching for syringe applicators – dental types seem to be promising, but not sure if the general public can purchase them

  • Will also check out Golden High Flow paints and Liquitex Flow Aid.

  • As for the paint (household acrylic), the yellow was fine, but the red was too lumpy to enter or exit the syringe tip – took a long time to fill the accordion reservoir

  • The top band of violet looks too dark – almost black. Wish I had mixed a tiny bit of white to lighten the color up, but I do like the contrast.

  • The paint stream from the syringe is ok, but is too confined to the top and bottom areas. Next time, let the paint stream run off the canvas edge. Also, the opposite area can be protected by covering with newspaper, etc., but would need to wait for paint to dry before covering.

  • Like the bold colors & the color relationships are pleasant (see color wheel)

  • Learned a lot…
