(9).       3:4      Color - Vertical                     Nov 2, 2017)

  • Was originally disappointed with 3:4, but the more I looked at it, the more I became mesmerized by it’s implications and possibilities

  • 9 (Color - Vertical) was the only vertical (portrait) version. Not a member of this series.

  • All paintings are based on polyrhythm ratios (e.g. - 3 in the time of 4), defined by a number of equal spaces along the top compared to a number of equal spaces on the bottom

  • Avoided ratios that produce uninteresting results (e.g. – 2 in the time of 4) – the two numbers should not be evenly divisible

  • All lines or shapes can be interpreted as musical symbols: tenuto articulation, marcato articulation, accent, percussion staff, neutral clef, ledger line, crescendo (decrescendo), bar line, up bow…

  • The set is (or should be) displayed progressively by date and complexity - 4 across the top, four across the bottom

  • The bottom four can either loop back in retrograde order, or begin again on the left side

  • 1 2 3 4         or      1 2 3 4

       8 7 6 5                  5 6 7 8

  • paintings 1,2,3 and 4 have white backgrounds

  • paintings 5,6,7, and eight have colored backgrounds

Indiscipline

King Crimson

I do remember one thing.
It took hours and hours but
By the time I was done with it,
I was so involved, I didn't know what to think.

I carried it around with me for days and days
Playing little games
Like not looking at it for a whole day
And then... looking at it.

To see if I still liked it.
I did.

I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.

I repeat...
The more I look at it,
The more I like it.
I do think it's good.

The fact is
No matter how closely I study it,
No matter how I take it apart,
No matter how I break it down,

It remains consistent.
I wish you were here to see it.

I like it.
